Dedicated to the archangel Saint Michael

The history of Mont-Saint-Michel begins in 708, when Bishop Aubert had a first sanctuary erected on Mont-Tombe in honor of the Archangel. Aubert receives the order to build a building in which the merits of the Archangel would be praised. But he dares not do anything and decides to wait. A second time the archangel appears to him, and Aubert still doubts. At the third apparition, there is no longer any doubt in the mind of the bishop, because Saint-Michel, furious, leaves Aubert a proof of his power: in the bishop's skull appears a circular hole. He does not seem to suffer from it, because he will not die until years later. Today Aubert's skull is kept in the Avranches basilica.
