The Jewish preacher Stephen became a deacon within the first Christian community of Jerusalem. Accused of four blasphemies, he was condemned to death. He became the first Christian martyr, and his devotion only increased when his remains were found in 415. Stephen became known for his miracles, narrated in The City of God by Saint Augustine. The stories of historians of the Middle Ages amplified its profound veneration within Christendom. The cathedrals of Toul and Metz were dedicated to him.
