Dieppe has been a fishing port since William the Conqueror. In the Middle Ages, the Duke sent herring carts to Parisians. Sailors from Dieppe later participated in discovering the Canary Islands, the Azores, Newfoundland, the West Indies, Florida, and even what would become New York by establishing a town called New Angoulême there in 1524. The most famous Dieppe sailor is Jean Ango (1480-1551), who seized the fabulous Aztec treasure sent by Cortés to Charles V and his navigation maps. He died half-ruined at the castle of Dieppe, of which he had been appointed captain in 1534. Dieppe now has four ports dedicated to different activities.
