The Louvre’s Gallery of Apollo bears witness to two centuries of painting and sculpture. It contains 105 works of art, including 41 paintings, 36 sculpture groups, and 28 tapestries. The successor of the 16th century grotesque painters, the designer and interior decorator Jean Berain (1640-1711) created his own, much lighter style. He abandoned acanthus foliage in favour of allegories and picturesque details (sea monsters, birds, monkeys). He collaborated with Le Brun and took part in the decoration of the Gallery of Apollo, for which he designed the panelling and window frames.
