Charles de La Fosse (1636-1716) was a pupil of Charles Le Brun, official painter to King Louis XIV. He spent several periods in Italy, particularly in Venice, where he learned the art of colour and fresco. In 1700, Jules Hardouin-Mansart entrusted him with the decoration of the cupola and the four pendentives of the Dôme des Invalides church. On the cupola, La Fosse painted a huge fresco of Saint Louis offering his arms to Christ, in the presence of the Virgin and angels. The painting celebrates the victory of Catholicism over the infidels, the triumph of orthodoxy over heresy. The four evangelists are painted in the pendentives.
