In the 19th century, the earthenware industry of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department experienced an inexorable decline. Undermined by the scarcity of raw materials and competition from English porcelain, the factories closed one after the other until the last one, Pierre-Toussaint Féraud's, in 1874. The activity was only revived in 1927 on the initiative of Marcel Joannon, alias Marcel Provence, a historian and poet also at the origin of the Earthenware Museum of Moustiers. Today, the municipality is home to eleven workshops, including the Atelier Soleil (photo).
