The Fort Carré of Antibes was built by order of the King of France Henri II in the second half of the 16th century. From 1585, it served both as a sentry on the neighboring border with the County of Nice and as a defense post for the port. Improved by Vauban at the end of the 17th century, it remained a strategic site until the moving of the border after the County of Nice joined France in 1860. Militarily downgraded, the fort then served as barracks before being ceded by the army to the Ministry of the City, Youth, and Sports in 1967. Bought by the city of Antibes Juan-les-Pins in 1997, the Fort Carré was transformed into a museum open to the public in 1998.
