Originally called Vavitu, Raivavae was renamed by Pomaré II in the early 19thC. The meaning of Raivavae, 'open sky', explains the Polynesian spelling, Ra'ivavae, 'ra'i' being 'sky' in Tahitian. The island was famous for the highly developed practice of a mystical erotism that became, with the art of war, one of its pillars. This myth stirs up that of the vahines still present in the imagination of the navigators who moor there.
