The ruins of the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle were classified in 1862, a few years before Alsace became part of Germany. Kaiser Wilhelm II was a Middle Ages enthusiast and undertook to restore it from 1900 to 1908. After the German defeat during World War One, the castle became a property of the French State again and obtained the status of National Palace. It is finally in 1993 that the Haut-Koenigsbourg was classified as a Historical Monument in its entirety. Today it is one of Alsace history's symbols and among the most visited monuments in the region.
