The Massif des Maures is home to 4,942 acres (2,000 ha) of chestnut groves, almost half of which grow on the territory of Collobrières, in the Var department. These trees produce different local varieties of chestnuts from the Marron du Var and Sardonne with fine and sweet flesh to the more floury Batarde, the rustic Impériale, the red Miquelin, or the less common Pignansie and Beltassie. Classified according to their size in Petite (more than 95 fruits per kg), Marchande (from 85 to 95 fruits per kg), or Belle (less than 65 fruits per kg), these chestnuts of renowned taste quality are almost entirely marketed fresh or grilled.
