In prehistoric times, Przewalski horses (Equus ferus przewalskii) were present throughout Europe and much of Asia, as evidenced by some 610 representations of wild horses dating from 9,000 to 30,000 years found in caves in France, Italy, and Spain. The species inevitably declined in the 19th century and survived after the capture of a few individuals in zoos and parks. Przewalski horses were eventually reintroduced into the wild at the end of the 20th century.
