The Polynesians did not wait for the arrival of the Europeans to use the mother-of-pearl of the oyster Pinctada margaritifera in the form of ornaments or weapons. But it was not until the 1960s that they were introduced to pearl farming after the first grafting tests carried out in 1962 by Jean-Marie Domard, the pioneer of the Tahitian pearl.
