The cicada is a pterygote (winged) insect that does not undergo any intermediate stage between the larva and the adult ones. As the larva and the adult cicada live in two different environments, underground and aerial, it can even be qualified as hemimetabolous. The complex life cycle of cicadas can be schematized as follows: from the egg, the insect passes to the larval (juvenile and wingless) stage, the longest, during which it molts and grows to become an imago in adulthood.
