From the island of Nou to the peninsula of Nouville

In the foreground of this aerial view of the Caledonian capital, appears the island of Nou, which has become the peninsula of Nouville. A landmark in the history of New Caledonia, it was exchanged with the English merchant James Paddon by France to establish a penal colony there in order to boost the settlement of colonists. Between 1864 and 1931, 75 boats supplied this new territory with men. In 1972, a dike was built to link the island to Grande-Terre by transforming it into an artificial peninsula.
