The weather vane is first and foremost a Christian symbol. In the Middle Ages, it appears on top of churches and is also an emblem of power for castles. After the abolition of privileges, it adorns the homes of the rich as well as those of artisans. It becomes a sign of social distinction and is used to indicate one’s occupation or rank. However, its primary role remains that of announcing the variation of the winds. To date, weather vane craftsmen compete in creativity and know-how to perpetuate their art.
