From surface to underground mining

Following Jean-Étienne Astier's first steps in ocher mining at the end of the 18th century, more than one hundred quarries and twenty-five factories opened in the Pays d'Apt during the 19th century. The ochres were mined in the open air in the municipalities of Gargas, Gignac, Mormoiron, Roussillon, Rustrel, Saint-Pantaléon, Villars and Villes-sur-Auzon and, from 1875, underground extraction made it possible to double the production.
