With the arrival of buttresses on the outside and cross ribs on the inside, churches' walls were no longer load-bearing. Architects could therefore practice more openings, and the windows got larger and more numerous on religious buildings. The 14th-century master glassmakers also invented a new technique allowing them to create large glass surfaces. These new possibilities were used to turn the churches' stained-glass windows into large picture books.
