The small town of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise is located in the South-West of the department of Puy-de-Dôme, in Auvergne. The name Besse comes from the Occitan ‘bessaou’, a birch tree. After the French Revolution, Besse was joined to the hamlet of Chandèze and the new entity became Besse en Chandesse. This name still appears on the town's entrance and exit signs even though Besse en Chandesse merged with neighbouring Saint-Anastaise in July 1973 to form the municipality of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise.
