Dating back to the 10th century
Even though the Tellure mining site experienced a booming of its activities in the 16th century, it is almost certain that the Romans already knew about the region's ore veins. Archaeologists have found ancient remains in the Val d'Argent, dating back to the first half of the 10th century. They indicate that a monk named Bidulphe most likely initiated the first mines in the area. Today, France no longer extracts silver and imports the ore from South America, Australia, and China.
