Saint Stephen Cathedral is pierced with a multitude of stained-glass windows, covering 1.60 acres (6,500 m²) over its walls and roof. Their abundant colors contrast with the relative simplicity of the columns. Notorious Renaissance glassmakers succeeded one another to create the largest glazed area of any religious building in Europe. Some of it was, however, destroyed during World War Two. Contemporary artists such as Jacques Villon, Roger Bissière, and Marc Chagall were entrusted with new stained-glass windows.
