Le dahlia commun, nommé Dahlia x pinnata, Dahlia hortensis, ou Dahlia x variabilis est une plante vivace aux racines tubéreuses d’origine horticole. Dahlia x pinnata représente les hybrides horticoles, les dahlias de jardin. Ces nombreux hybrides très variables en forme et en couleur descendent de 3 espèces ou individus importés en Espagne à la fin du 18e siècle, appelés à cette époque : Dahlia pinnata, Dahlia rosea et Dahlia coccinea.
Importé initialement pour la consommation des tubercules, les dahlias communs sont rapidement devenus des plantes ornementales extrêmement diversifiées : toutes les couleurs en dehors du bleu sont représentées.
