Le genre Dahlia Cav., 1791, appartient à la famille des Asteraceae et comprend une trentaine d’espèces. L'espèce la plus connue est le Dahlia pinnata largement cultivé et à l'origine de nombreux hybrides. Dahlia Cav., Cav. est l’abréviation botanique officielle de Antonio José Cavanilles, botaniste espagnol, né à Valence le 16 janvier 1745, mort à Madrid le 5 mai 1804, directeur du jardin botanique de Madrid, il donna le nom du genre Dahlia en hommage au botaniste suédois Anders Dahl.
