From a fortress to a museum

The citadel of Saint-Tropez, commissioned by King Henry IV of France to his engineer Raymond de Bonnefons as part of a program to defend the Provençal coast against Spanish invasions, has crowned the city for more than 400 years. Its construction began in 1602 with a massive keep typical of the coastal fortifications of the XVI and XVII centuries on the mill's hill. The fortress with ramparts unable to withstand modern shells lost its strategic role in 1873. Since 2013, it has housed the Maritime History Museum of Saint-Tropez, the third French port of the Mediterranean in the 18th century.
