From a zoo to an ornithological park

The ornithological park of Pont de Gau is located in Camargue about 2.4 mi (4 km) from Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer via the departmental road that connects the town to Arles. Created in 1949 by a passionate ornithologist, André Lamouroux, the site, back then a simple space composed of small aviaries exhibiting Camargue bird species, acquired its status as an ornithological park in 1974. It has since been one of the 11 ornithological parks in France, which has only one other in the South region: the Tropical Bird Garden of La Londe-les-Maures.
