Before the arrival of bulldozers in the quarries, the Luberon ocher was extracted with peaks and explosives. Washed and made crumbly, it then flowed to the settling ponds along channels called valats that held the sand. Sufficiently thick layers of ocher were let to dry in the sun and the mistral during the summer before being transformed into bricks and processed in factories.
