Cymbalizations specific to each species

The male cicada cymbalizes by producing a clicking sound generated by the rapid deformation of a membrane of its abdomen activated by a muscle. The shape and elasticity of this membrane depend on the number and arrangement of the lines of its chitinous reinforcements. Each species hence produces a typical sound with unique frequency and modulation. It is amplified by the resonance chamber of the abdomen and evacuated by vents. Each membrane is protected under a cover, the extent and shape of which serve for species determination.
