After a long ethnographic research, the renowned Genoese architect Renzo Piano designed the cultural center project bearing the name of the famous separatist chief Jean-Marie Tjibaou. He erected 10 semicircle structures, made of wood and metal, on the Tina peninsula on the outskirts of Nouméa. They correspond to the 10 customary Kanak areas, a subdivision system parallel to the administrative subdivisions of New Caledonia.
