In the 1st century, the Romans imported the citrus fruit growing in Corsica. Nowadays, it is an important part of the island's agricultural production. Most orchards of clementine trees are located on the East coast plains. Since 2007, the Corsican clementine, which is the only clementine of French origin, is protected by a geographical indication: the « clémentine de Corse ».
