In New Caledonia, the majority of cults are Christian, especially Catholic (60%), but also Protestant (30%) or Pentecostal because of the presence of evangelization missions from the beginning of the 19th century which abolished the totemic representation, banned the sorcerers and 'masters of the earth' and provided a European education erasing the values of the local Kanak culture. Catholicism is well represented on Grande-Terre while Protestantism dominates in the Loyalty Islands.
