From the beginnings of car making, manufacturers focused even more on aesthetics than on mechanics. The clean lines and the beauty of the ornaments were studied at least as much as the components. A car was a supreme luxury in the 1920s, and it had to display its owner's wealth. Precious woods, shiny brass and copper, as well as leather, were used as interior materials. The first seats were nothing less than reproductions of armchairs found in the salons of the bourgeoisie. Emblematic cars are on display in the Masterpieces section of the Cité de l'Automobile in Mulhouse.
