Crystal blowing

The master glassmaker, equipped with a long hollow metal rod, takes the molten crystal from inside the furnace. In order for the viscous material to adhere to the rod, it must reach a temperature of approximately 2,190°F (1,200°C). Depending on the size of the piece, the glassmaker needs to perform several picks. The strongest pickers can carry up to 20 kg of molten mass at the end of their cane. Blowing glass or crystal requires a long apprenticeship because the breath must be regular and continuous until the desired shape is obtained. The worker must therefore have a large lung capacity.
