In the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, bay and channels are covered by fast ice for most of the year. In spring, the ice melts and the light can penetrate the ice, conferring to the sea ice a beautiful blue color. During the polar winter, the night is permanent and waters under the ice are in darkness.
