Crossed by several hiking trails

Mont Ventoux is crossed by three main long-distance hiking trails: the GR 4 starting the ascent at Malaucène, joining Mont Serien and reaching the summit; the GR 9 crossing Buis-les-Baronnies and meandering on the mountainside 1,312 ft (400 m) below the ridgeline, and the GR91 skirting the massif to the west. These main routes offer different variants that mostly follow the drailles (routes linked to transhumance) traced by the shepherds following the rise of sheep farming between the 14th and the middle of the 19th centuries. In addition to these pastoral paths, the Sainte-Croix pilgrimage route starts from Les Baux and reaches the summit of Mont Ventoux, where a chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross was built in the 15th century.
