The Normandy American Cemetery is located at Colleville-sur-Mer, Calvados, in the Normandy region. The site was chosen for its close proximity to Omaha Beach, lying just below. The cemetery is dedicated to the American soldiers who died during the Normandy landings of 6 June 1944 and the weeks that followed. 9,387 soldiers exactly are buried there, all Americans except for five Canadians, one Mexican, one Englishman, and one Scotsman. In the shape of a Latin cross or a Star of David, all white headstones are symbols of purity and peace. And on each of them are engraved the fallen soldier’s first and last name, their State or country of origin, division, regiment, rank, as well as the date of death.
