Growth of the young elephant
1
0
When the mother has enough food to produce a high quality milk, the baby elephant's growth is regular, from birth to 4 years old and its weaning period. A young male, who grows faster, consumes more milk than a young female. So, the mother needs more food to nurse a small male. In times of scarcity, the neonatal mortality of males is greater, which explains the higher number of adult females.
