Despite their vegetal aspect, crinoids are echinoderms like sea urchins or starfish. About 650 species of living crinoids have been identified, the vast majority of which belong to the order of the comatulas (Comatulida) which have lost their peduncle and are vagile. Their body has an internal skeleton of rough appearance covered with fine soft teguments.
