Unlike the flat Loyalty Islands, Grande-Terre has many rivers. The smallest of them are called 'creeks' and look like mountain streams. Their rugged upper courses are punctuated by numerous waterfalls and freshwater basins whose living water can be drunk and where bathing presents no risk of disease.
