The shutters of the Issenheim Altarpiece are enthroned in the luminous choir of the Dominican convent’s chapel, which became the Unterlinden Museum in 1849. The masterpiece by Grünewald and Nicolas de Haguenau has been undergoing restoration since 2018. One after the other, the eight limewood panels and the ten sculptures that make it up have been taken down for cleaning at the Centre de restauration des Musées de France. They illustrate several episodes from the life of Christ and of Saint Anthony the hermit, patron saint of the Antonine order of Issenheim, the sponsors of the piece.
