Covered with an imposing oak frame

Some 177 ft (54 m) long, the first floor of the flour mill of Cluny Abbey has the particularity of being covered with an imposing oak frame in reverse hull for more lightness. It was built by carpenters from the Brest shipyards with beams cut and dried for 120 years then bent 50 years before being assembled. The frame is paneled with chestnut. Formerly used as a grain storage attic, the room now houses a lapidary museum where the renowned Romanesque capitals of the choir of Cluny III are exhibited.
