Courtship display

To make the wheel, by deploying its longest feathers (4.5ft i.e 1.5m on average) located furthest back on its body, is the essential phase of the courtship display of the male blue peacock (pavo cristatus). This exhibition is possible thanks to the specificity of these feathers provided laterally with barbs that are not linked together but loose on the major part of their, particularly elongated spine. One phase of the display consists of turning the back on the female to show her the tufts of contrasting down from the underside of the tail.
