Couples together for life

The spring migration of Common Cranes (Grus grus) lasts less time than the autumn migration. The young males are eager to arrive at the nesting areas to meet their future mates. Courtship begins in February on the wintering grounds. The Common Cranes walk with quick, short steps, with their wings half-open, and circle on the ground. They greet each other and hop about with high-pitched calls. They have to choose carefully, as couples remain together for the rest of their lives.
