Its hierarchical social structure usually consists of a monogamous couple, their offspring and often non-breeding adults from previous litters. The couple has a very strong bond and can stay together throughout their lives, the longevity of the black-backed jackal reaching fourteen years old. Its territory can cover 6,2 square miles (10km2), they mark its limits by leaving their urine and feces in prominent places.
