Lava flow

0
During effusive volcanic eruptions, lava flows and spreads over several kilometres in length and a few tens of meters in width before cooling down into basalt. On its surface, it takes on a chaotic appearance, generally black or dark grey in colour going towards red for the components of the core of the volcanic cone whose pigments oxidize at high temperature (1,112° F / 600° C) upon contact with the oxygen in the air.
