There is a belt of Precambrian rock veined with copper on the west coast and the south coast of Victoria island. On the northwest, the Shaler Mountains reach above 600 meters. On the east, a vast undulating plateau surmounts steep coastal cliffs. Lowlands are dotted with rivers and lakes. This large island is sparsely populated: the inhabitants, mostly Inuit communities, are grouped in only two coastal villages.
