Corrèze slate roofs

In Normandy, slate has gradually replaced all thatched roofs. Until the 1960s, the slate mines of Caumont-sur-Aure (Calvados) enjoyed a flourishing commercial activity (the blue gold of Caumont). Alas, the last mine was used up when the restoration of the abbey’s roofs was undertaken. This long-term renovation lasted nearly 14 years. The slates used were cut in Travassac, in Corrèze. This slate is closest to the original appearance of the abbey’s roofs. It was therefore that slate that had the honour of being chosen for this project.
