Acropora corals are particularly fond of the clear, well-oxygenated waters of Polynesian lagoons. They are colonized by various species of fish, including Pomacentridae (damselfish), Chaetodontidae (butterflyfish) and Acanthuridae (surgeon fish) who take refuge in the branched coral colonies at the slightest danger. Some of them even feed exclusively on coral polyps.
