The 'habitable' surface of the coral colonies is reduced and the shelters are more or less effective against predators according to their size The finely branched corals provide deep but very narrow shelters, not accessible to all fish. The crevices are deeper when the coral branches are thicker. The same species of fish can change their type of shelter over the course of their lives.
