Coral caves: vestiges of Rurutu's strange story

Millions of years ago, the undersea volcano Mac Donald propelled the island of Rurutu out of the water. Then, the latter slowly collapsed. This allowed the emergence of a coral reef around it. This was before a second volcanic eruption that raised the island 240 feet (80 meters) above the sea level. Its coral reef was transformed into coastal cliffs in which one can admire, nowadays, astonishing limestone caves.
