Copra, an essential resource
The cultivation of copra occupies a prominent place in the local Polynesian economy, especially in the Tuamotu archipelago, which accounts for 65% of the total production. It has been practiced since the 19th century in French Polynesia, mainly on the atolls which have the most favorable conditions of sunshine and dry heat. In the remote islands with a weak tourist flow, it is - along with pearl farming - the main source of income for many families.
