In Honduras, the Mayan city of Copán was discovered in the sixteenth century by the Spanish, but archaeological excavations were only undertaken from the nineteenth century by the Americans. More than 4,500 structures are discovered and allow to estimate that in the eighteenth century, the population of the valley would have reached 27,000 inhabitants.
